PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus in which recording material is easily separated from an intermediate transfer belt on a downstream side of a secondary transfer part without disturbing rotation of the intermediate transfer belt nor damaging the recording material. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes a separation belt mechanism 30 which feeds separation belts 33a and 33b between the intermediate transfer belt 9 and a secondary transfer roller 11 such that the secondary transfer part T2 is passed through integrally with the recording material P. After positioning the separation belts 33a and 33b in both edge areas in a width direction of the recording material P and starting to feed them while the secondary transfer roller is separated from the intermediate transfer belt 9, the secondary transfer roller 11 is brought into press-contact with the intermediate transfer belt and the recording material P is supplied to the secondary transfer part. The separation belts 33a and 33b peel both ends of the recording material P from the intermediate transfer belt 9 on the downstream side of the secondary transfer part T2 and guide the recording material P in a horizontal direction. After the recording material P passes, the secondary transfer part T2 is separated and the separation belts 33a and 33b are taken up to a feeding part 31 from a take-up part 32, and operation is made to stand by.
