The method involves capturing surrounding area of a vehicle (1) by image capture units (2, 3), where individual images (E) captured by the image capture units produce an overall image (G). The overall image is displayed by a display unit (5), where the overall image shows the vehicle and surrounding area from a bird's-eye view. The vehicle and the surrounding area are illuminated depending on captured real illumination in the overall image. Real illumination is captured on basis of illumination adjustments of one of the capture units. An operating image screen is displayed by the display unit.
