An area-based service method of a portable terminal and the portable terminal performing the method are provided to control the functions of the portable terminal based on area-based service control information provided from a network when it enters a limited service state. A controller(413) determines whether a portable terminal exists in a limit service state. If so, the portable terminal is controlled based on area-based service control information which is offered from a network. A wireless transceiver(421) provides the area-based service control information received from the network to the controller.
