The unit (12) has a proton-conducting membrane (14) and two electrodes (16, 18) attached to the proton-conducting membrane on both sides. A bipolar plate (20) is attached at the electrodes at a membrane averted side for supplying of reaction gases and/or discharge of gaseous or fluid product components. The bipolar plate consists of a non-metallic material such as plastics, ceramics and glasses, and electrical conductive elements (28) are contacted with the electrodes and are arranged for electrical connection with the electrodes. The electrodes exhibit a layer of metal mesh or metal foam, and a coating of catalytic material.
