A surface light source and a backlight unit having the same are provided to obtain an environment-friendly surface light source device by using a discharge gas of mercury free. The light source body comprises the first substrate(120) and the second substrate(130). The first substrate and the second substrate are formed with the transparent glass substrates. They is arranged to be faced with each other. A plurality of discharge channel(140) is formed in the first substrate. The edge of the second substrate and the first substrate are sealed by a sealing member(180) of frit. The first electrode(200) is formed in the surface of the first substrate. The second electrode(300) is formed in the surface of the second substrate. The first electrode and the second electrode are arranged to be faced with each other.
