PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To highly accurately estimate the scene of an image signal with a simple configuration. SOLUTION: The high luminance rate and the low luminance rate of an image signal are detected in each divided area on a screen and a plurality of evaluation values are calculated by applying weighted means using scene estimation weight data to each of the high luminance rate and the low luminance rate. These evaluation values become values expressing the inclination of luminance in each area of the screen for each kind of a scene. Thereby, similarity with respective scenes is decided in such a method for comparing the evaluation values in each scene with a reference value for instance. For instance, to which kind of the scene out of a white background, backlight, a spot, a green background, a night view, etc., an image signal to be processed corresponds, is estimated on the basis of the similarity.
