Device for mowing crops, comprising a series of mowing units arranged side by side at intermediate distances, which mowing units each comprise a knife holder (6a, 6b) with at least one knife carrying portion (12) for a mowing knife (7), and a drive mechanism for the knife holder, which drive mechanism comprises for each knife holder a first drive element (20, 40) which comprises a knife holder carrying hub portion (40) and which is drivingly engaged with a second drive element (30) of the drive mechanism for rotatingly driving the knife holder about a vertical centre line, wherein the knife holder and the hub portion form a unitary rotatable assembly which, at a position between the knife carrying portion (12) and the hub portion (40), is provided with a break connection (60a-f) which is effective in a radial direction.
