The method involves transmitting position data (Dpos) of a vehicle (1) from a vehicle internal communication unit (2) e.g. mobile telephone, to a mobile communication unit (3) e.g. mobile telephone, when the vehicle is parked, stopped and/or an ignition key is pulled from an ignition lock. The transmission of the position data is automatically activated by the vehicle internal communication unit or depending on a condition of the vehicle internal communication unit. The position data is transmitted from the mobile communication unit to a vehicle external central data processing unit (4).
