PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a characteristics extraction device for extracting new characteristic data which can be used for recognition of an object from three-dimensional image data. SOLUTION: The characteristics extraction device calculates gradient vectors, including the information of the inclining direction of luminance in each pixel of three-dimensional image data, when a moving image is recognized as three-dimensional data, and calculates the correlation of the angles of the gradient vectors with respect to a set of pixels, corresponding to the self-correlation of positions by considering self-correlation limited to a local area in the image. The featured value becomes an integrated value as for the region of those correlation values as a whole. The correlation information for inclining direction and position of luminance is calculated so that the inclination of the outline curved face and curvature information of the object can be extracted. Thus, simultaneous and effective extraction of the information of the motion or shape of the object can be conducted, and recognition capability is enhanced. COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
