PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a tensioner capable of exhibiting the hydraulic damper action just after driving, by restraining air from staying in a pressure chamber even in a state of stopping the driving, in the tensioner for supplying tension to a timing chain and a timing belt, by driving a piston by using oil. SOLUTION: This tensioner 50 includes a housing 51 forming a cylinder chamber 53 inside, the piston 52 slidably arranged in the cylinder chamber 53 and projecting from the housing 51, a check valve 54 supplying the oil to the cylinder chamber 53, the pressure chamber 58 formed in the piston 52 and communicating with the cylinder chamber 53, and a spacer 80 stored in the pressure chamber 58 and having a specific gravity smaller than the oil.
