PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new method for converting a≥3Cω-halogenoalkane obtained by a telomerization reaction, etc., to aω-halogenoalkane having the smaller number of carbon atoms and a shorter chain length than those of the above by a relatively simple method. SOLUTION: This method for producing theω-halogenoalkane having a shortened chain length is provided by heating theω-halogenoalkane expressed by the general formula: R<SB>f</SB>(CF<SB>2</SB>CF<SB>2</SB>)<SB>n</SB>X[wherein, R<SB>f</SB>is a 1-6C perfluoroalkyl group; (n) is an integer of 2-7; and X is a halogen atom] at 350 to 500°C.
