PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of driving an imaging element capable of restraining heat generation in the imaging element, and to provide an imaging apparatus. SOLUTION: When a signal on the start of imaging is received and then an external trigger is received as a prescribed signal, the drive of a CCD type solid-state imaging device (CCD) is stopped from the reception of the signal on the start of imaging to that of the external trigger, and the drive of the CCD is started in synchronization with the reception of the external trigger, thereby: shortening drive time of the CCD by the amount of time from the reception of the signal on the start of imaging to that of the external trigger without immediately starting to drive the CCD after receiving the signal on the start of imaging; and restraining the heat generation of the CCD.
