PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an article conveying apparatus enhanced in reliability in a boarding operation mode without sharing the time for checking the operation of an overspeed detection means. SOLUTION: The article conveying apparatus includes: an operation control means (C3) which is freely switched to the non-boarding operation mode in which a moving body is moved at the speed equal to or lower than the maximum speed for the non-boarding control or to the boarding operation mode for moving the moving body at the speed equal to or lower than the maximum speed for the boarding control lower than the maximum speed for the non-boarding control; overspeed detection means (15, 16) for outputting the overspeed detection signal if the moving speed is higher than the permissible limit speed set to be higher than the maximum speed for the boarding control; forcible stop means (23, 24) for stopping the operations of driving means (1a, 2b) if the overspeed detection means outputs the overspeed detection signal when the operation control means is in the boarding operation mode; and overspeed detection monitoring means (17, 18) for discriminating the abnormality unless the overspeed detection means outputs any overspeed detection signal when the operation control means is in the non-boarding operation mode, and moves the moving body at the speed equal to or higher than the permissible limit speed.
