The invention relates to a high power-density and high-energy laser radiation source which can preferably be used for machining materials. An optical unit (8) for shaping the laser beam on a surface to be machined (81) is provided for. Several directly modulated diode-pumped fiber lasers (2) whose outputs (13) are arranged as a bundle are used. The beams (13) emerging from the lasers (2) are gathered and bundled by the optical unit (8) in such a way that they strike the surface to be machined (81) in a point.
