A two-phase driving action is performed in at least one sub-field by a first circuit and a second circuit. The first circuit applies, for an initializing period, a first ramp waveform to drop from a first potential to a second potential, to a plurality of first scanning electrodes, and applies, for a writing period, scanning pulses sequentially to the first scanning electrodes. The second circuit applies, for the initializing period, a second ramp waveform to drop from the first potential to a third potential higher than the second potential, to a plurality of second scanning electrodes, and then raises the second scanning electrodes to a fourth potential. For the period while the first scanning pulses are being applied for the writing period, the second circuit holds the second scanning electrodes at a fifth potential higher than the third potential and lower than the fourth potential, and then applies the scanning pulses sequentially to the second scanning electrodes. The discharge failure of the writing discharge can be prevented by applying the two-phase driving action.
