PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display apparatus capable of preventing the occurrence of unnecessary diffraction order light (flare light) of a diffractive optical element due to incoincidence between a visual axis of an observer and an optical axis of an optical system. SOLUTION: The image display apparatus includes: an image forming element 1 configured to form an original image; a first optical element 10 configured to reflect a light flux from the image forming element with a plurality of reflective surfaces 6, 7 and emit the reflected light flux; and an optical system 15 configured to guide the light flux emitted from the first optical element to an exit pupil 2. The optical system includes a diffractive optical element 3, wherein a portion 21a closer to the exit pupil side than the diffractive optical element in the optical system has a negative optical power.
