The device (10) has a laser-transmitting unit (15) provided for transmitting a laser beam (16) and a receiving unit (17) i.e. photodiode, provided for receiving of a reflected laser beam. Scanning of a bearing surface (18) of a profile is performed in a radial direction of the tire by the laser beam, where the detecting device is arranged in a wheel housing (13) of a motor vehicle. A recognition unit is provided for recognition of a movement condition of a tire (14) moved in a driving operation. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating of a detecting device.
