PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain accurate vehicle detection by relatively simple arithmetic processing in an image type vehicle detector. SOLUTION: In an image type vehicle sensor 1, a control device 20 performs (1) detection of stopping vehicle by calculating a matching rate R by pattern matching of a photographic image taken by a camera 10 with a predetermined template image and comparing the matching rate with a predetermined threshold, and (2) detection of moving vehicle using an inter-frame difference method, and determines whether a vehicle is present or not based on both the detection results. Based on a moving speed V of a moving vehicle, an area where it is estimated that the other vehicle is absent in the front of the moving vehicle (vehicle-free estimated area) is determined, and the threshold of the matching rate R in the vehicle-free estimated area is changed to a value according to the matching rate R in this area which is calculated when a stopping vehicle is detected.
