A backlight unit for improving the luminous efficiency according to image data which is inputted from the outside, a liquid crystal display and a driving method using the same are provided to improve light emission efficiency by driving a plurality of LED modules and fluorescent lamps according to the property of video data. A fluorescent lamp is combined with one or more LED module in a backlight(12). A dimming controller(14) generates a first dimming control signal controlling the driving timing of each LED module according to gradation value or luminance value. According to the dimming control part is the gray level or the luminance value, the second dimming control signal controlling the drive timing of each fluorescent lamp is produced. A backlight controller operates each LED module by producing the first driving signal according to the first dimming control signal. |
