In the process of grinding an end face of a glass plate, a grinding fluid is effectively prevented from being scattered on the plane of the glass plate and the grinding fluid is efficiently recovered. A shielding plate (6) includes a surrounding portion (9) for surrounding a contact portion (4) from the center side of the plane of a glass substrate (2). One end of the surrounding portion (9) extends crossing an end face (2a) of the glass substrate (2) on the forward side in the rotational direction of a grinding wheel (3). A purge nozzle (7) is disposed on the opposite side of the shielding plate (6) from the grinding wheel (3). In the purge nozzle (7), nozzle openings for jetting purge water (13) for preventing the grinding fluid from entering the plane of the glass substrate (2) through a gap between the shielding plate (6) and the glass substrate (2) are arranged in a line.
