A pressure sensitive adhesive tape comprises a metal foil, film or "unified" paper backing and an agressively tacky adhesive in which is embedded a non-woven mono-layer of lineally aligned glass filament yarns, the composite tape having a tensile strength of at least 3001bs. per inch width. The paper backing may be flat or creped, "unified" by saturating with a waterinsoluble rubbery composition or by chemical treatment as with parchmentised paper and may be backsized with shellac, a cellulosic lacquer or an alkyd resin. A film backing may be of regenerated cellulose, cellulose acetate, a vinyl polymer, polythene or rubber hydrochloride and may be backsized with cellulose tristearate, tripalmitate or trilaurate. The adhesive may be a copolymer of 2 -ethyl -butylacrylate and ethyl acrylate or may be a rubberresin adhesive of which the rubber base may be crude natural rubber, butadiene-styrene copolymer, or polyisobutylene and the resin component rosin, ester gum, pure hydrocarbon terpene resin melting nt 15‹C or hydrogenated indene-coumarone resin melting at 150‹C. The adhesive may include pigments, e.g. zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, carbon black. The glass filament yarns may be twisted, e.g. one twist per inch or may be untwisted bundles of glass filaments. The backing may be first coated with the adhesive, the glass filaments applied to the adhesive and then a further layer of adhesive applied.
