A process control module 50 is automatically configured for synchronous execution on a Fieldbus segment 56 of a process control network (10). It is determined if input function block 52 and output function block 51 of control module 50 are assigned to Foundation (RTM) Fieldbus field devices 54, 55. If so, intermediate function block 53 (e.g. a PID block) is automatically assigned for execution to a fieldbus port 59 of an input/output (I/O) device 58 (e.g. a fieldbus card) associated with Fieldbus segment 56. Thus, function blocks of the control module, which would otherwise be scheduled to execute in a process controller 57, are assigned to the I/O device 58. This enables all of the critical function blocks within the control module to execute in one macrocycle of the Fieldbus segment, thereby executing synchronously on a Fieldbus segment. Thus, the overall execution rate of the control module is increased compared to the traditional split of function blocks between a controller and field devices on a Fieldbus segment. |
