A microtome comprises a knife 18, a specimen holder 26, a first motor unit 24 for relative displacement of the knife and holder, a second motor unit 28 for relative oscillatory motion of the knife and holder to produce sections from a specimen held by the holder, a control system for the motor units, and an operating unit comprising a concentric rotary ring 42 and rotary knob 44 to respectively set first and second operating states of the first motor unit in which the knife and holder relative displacement is respectively at an elevated speed and at a predetermined advance rate. The ring 42 is rotatable to set the displacement speed as a function of its angle of rotation, preferably proportional to the angle, and to automatically set the speed to zero when released and the knob 44 is rotatable between detent settings to set the advance rate as a function of its angle of rotation. |
