A system for delivering work pieces in a lathe combined with a loader and a work piece sorting method are provided to sort work pieces accurately by automatically measuring the outer diameter of the work pieces while passing through an optical sensor. A system for delivering work pieces in a lathe comprises a loader(10) supplying work pieces to a machine tool, an optical sensor(16) located on the moving path of the loader, and a central control unit(200) controlling the movement of the loader based on the work pieces sensed by the optical sensor and determining the specification of the work pieces. The loader includes horizontal and vertical transfer units(11,12). The central control unit detects the position coordinates of the work pieces based on the sensing signal of the optical sensor and computes the specification of the work pieces based on the difference between the position coordinates.
