A reach and rake adjustable steering column clamping mechanism for providing locking between first and second parts comprising a first rack 1 having at least one row of teeth 4 which is connected to the first part, a second rack 2 having at least one row of teeth which can mesh with the row of teeth 4 of the first rack 1, the second rack 2 being connected to the second part, a guide finger, and a resilient spring 5 which connects the guide finger to the second rack 2, arranged so that when a force is applied to the second rack 2, which moves it from the released position towards the meshed position whilst the tips of the teeth of the two racks 1,2 are aligned with each other, the guide finger initially contacts a flank of at least one tooth of the first rack 1 prior to any contact between the rows of teeth and thereafter slides down and across the flank to the root of the tooth which causes a corresponding downwards and sideways movement between the two racks 1,2 to ensure that the racks can fully engage. The resilient spring 5 may comprise an L shaped leaf spring. This assembly is used to provide positive locking so that in the event of an impact there is no unwanted movement of the steering wheel. |
