A method and an apparatus for compressing and restoring a file of a compression format are provided to restore a compression file name by using code page information stored in a compression file, thereby correctly restoring the compression file name by using code page information stored in the compression file. A compression target file or a compression target folder is selected(S320). If a file header of a compression file format does not support an extension header, an information file including compression information having code page information is generated(S360). The information file is added to a compression target file list(S370). The compression target file list is compressed to generate a compression file(S380).
