A wire rod coil transfer apparatus and a controlling method thereof are provided to close a fixing wall and a moving wall when wire rod coil is rapidly or slowly cooled down in order not to lose coil retention temperature in an early stage. A wire rod coil transfer apparatus comprises a plurality of chain conveyors(20), a plurality of roller conveyors(15,25), a fixing wall(22) and a moving wall(24). The chain conveyor transfers the wire rod coil(1). The roller conveyors connect the chain conveyors. The fixing wall is installed on the side of one chain conveyor among the several chain conveyors. The moving wall moves together with the fixing wall along the chain conveyor to be closed.
