An identification reader for reading a transponder is provided. The identification reader includes a signal generator capable of generating a signal having a first resonant frequency equivalent to the resonant frequency of the transponder; and a series resonant circuit including at least an inductive antenna and at least one impedance element, configured to receive and transmit the signal. The identification reader includes a controller configured to alter the impedance of the impedance element in order to reduce the level of coupling between the series resonant circuit and the transponder. A method of adjusting the range of an identification reader is also provided.
