PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve starter durability in a starter for turning on electricity to a motor after a pinion 4 has rotated to an engageable position with a ring gear 3 and is engaged with the ring gear 3. SOLUTION: Torque required to rotate the pinion 4 in contact with the ring gear 3 relatively to the ring gear 3 is defined as "engaging torque before starting" and further torque required to release a clutch member 59 from a certain abutting condition is defines as "idling torque". The engaging torque before starting is set smaller than the idling torque. Accordingly, an oncoming timing when the engaging timing of a pinion 4 with a ring gear 3 and the timing of turning on electricity to the motor is inverted can be delayed.
