PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of holding stable image quality by improving developer transport properties. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes a developing device, having a developing roller, a guide member for transporting developer to the developing roller, a supply roller for supplying the developer to the guide member, a developer stirring and transporting means for transporting the developer to the supply roller and a developer regulating member for regulating a developer amount on the developing roller, and a toner replenishing device. The image forming apparatus includes a control means, having a toner passing amount detection means for detecting a developing toner amount, and a developing roller sliding distance integrating means, and controls to forcibly discharge toner to a non-image area of a photoreceptor from the developing device, when a toner passing amount relative to a sliding distance detected at prescribed intervals A is smaller than a prescribed value x, and controls to interrupt image formation and forcibly discharge the toner to the photoreceptor from the developing device when the toner passing amount detected at prescribed intervals B longer than the prescribed interval A relative to the sliding distance of the developing roller is smaller than a prescribed value y.
