The method involves guiding a transparent or translucent sheet (2) to a sheet processing machine in a sheet conveying direction (12) over sheet paths (42, 43). The sheet is aligned relative to a front edge by front edge stops (26). A position of a side edge is detected by an optoelectric detection unit (25) after the alignment, and subsequently a target-position of the side edge is realized by passing the sheet transverse to the direction. The sheet is provided with a marking (41) by a marking unit (40) i.e. ink-jet printer, in a distance (27) to the front edge before detection.
