<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically extract and select a scene a user pays attention to in moving image data during a period of photographing the moving image. <P>SOLUTION: In an image automatic selection method of an imaging apparatus that stores moving image data obtained by photographing a subject in a recording medium by compressing it to a reference frame or a differential frame for each frame according to a moving image compression standard while photographing the subject, feature values between a reference frame and a differential frame continuous with each other is detected and the reference frame or the differential frame whose amount of features is greater than or equal to a threshold is selected after adding selection information thereto. As the feature values, a value indicative of a correlation of data size between a reference frame and a differential frame is used, and preferably, the feature values is used, which becomes a greater value as the difference in data size or its ratio is smaller.
