PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To propose a still picture recording apparatus and a still picture recording method by which consecutive photographing intervals during a consecutive photographing mode can be shortened while efficiently using a recording capacity of a recording medium. SOLUTION: In the still picture recording apparatus and the still picture recording method for continuously capturing a plurality of still pictures obtained by sequentially photo-electric converting an optical image of a subject and for recording image data of the captured still pictures on a recording medium, the image data of the plurality of still pictures captured are stored, a still picture to be recorded on a recording medium is selected from among the plurality of still pictures based on a change amount of an image between still pictures, and image data of the selected still picture are recorded on the recording medium.
