PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To pick up the functional signal of brain activities from the measured data by the control of endogenous variations caused by autonomic nerve activities, heartbeats or breathing, various forms of changes arising from the bodily movements or physical conditions of a subject, which are known to be included besides the functional signal of brain activities actually measured by fNIRS. SOLUTION: The Reference Subtraction technique (RS method) has been introduced, which newly uses reference probes in the vicinity of light receiving probes for calculating the variations of each hemoglobin (Hb) from measured absorbance differences between these two points.
