PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve cleaning performance and suppress image failure resulting from reverse transfer, in a configuration in which secondary transfer residual toner is distributed to a plurality of image carriers from an intermediate transfer body, reversely transferred and cleaned off. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus has: a first mode in which concurrently with transfer of a toner image to the intermediate transfer body 20 from a first image carrier 2a, residual toner is transferred from the intermediate transfer body 20 to the first image carrier 2a; and a second mode in which only toner images on a second image carrier 2d are successively formed on a plurality of transfer materials P, a power source 40 applies a voltage with the opposite polarity of that applied to a second transfer member 5d, to a first transfer member 5a, and concurrently with transfer of the toner images to the intermediate transfer body 20 from the second image carrier 2d, residual toner is transferred from the intermediate transfer body 20 to the second image carrier 2d.
