<p>An apparatus and method for tracking a target wherein a new position fix is taken when the measured movement of the target is more than a predetermined threshold amount or when the position fix has not been updated in a predetermined interval. The apparatus and method minimize energy use and network resources by performing position determination fixes only when needed.</p>
