A parameter characterizing energy conversion in an internal combustion engine (1) e.g. momentum efficiency factor, of each partial injection determined in a function level for controlling the engine and another parameter characterizing the energy conversion determined in a function monitoring level for monitoring proper function i.e. function level, of the engine are plausibilized with each other.
