PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging apparatus in which power supply battery consumption can be suppressed as far as possible, the imaging apparatus confirming a progress of exposure by displaying the image of a subject during execution of a bulb exposure operation, and to provide a control method for the imaging apparatus. SOLUTION: The imaging apparatus comprises: an imaging section 291 for repeatedly picking up the image of a subject at a set period, during execution of a bulb photographing, and outputting image data; an addition computation section 294 for performing addition computation to past image data each time the image data are output, and generating an added image; an image display section 296 for displaying the added image; and a display illumination section 298 for illuminating the display screen of the image display section 296 just for a predetermined time linked with updating of image display on the image display section 296.
