PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten a processing time by reducing a processing load in a vehicle obstacle detection unit, by devising the processing of pattern matching. SOLUTION: From images in the vicinity of a vehicle imaged by a stereo camera 3 (imaging means) for obstacle detection, a driving road surface is detected by an ECU 20 (road surface detection means, object area set means and obstacle detection means). An obstacle is detected by setting only an area of a predetermined height from the road surface as an obstacle detection object area, and by comparing the images in the above obstacle detection object area with data for pattern matching.
