PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reflection type spatial light modulator capable of improving light resistance and preventing the damage of a liquid crystal layer. SOLUTION: The reflection type spatial light modulator 1 for controlling the phases of incident light and reflected light while reflecting the light made incident from the front includes the liquid crystal layer 5 which makes liquid crystal be an optical modulation material to modulate the incident light, a dielectric multilayered film 7 which reflects the incident light, and a phase shift layer 6 which is arranged between the liquid crystal layer 5 and the dielectric multilayered film 7 so as to shift the phases of the incident light and the reflected light at one boundary of the liquid crystal layer 5.
