PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of inhibiting the formation of red rust on an end face and scratched face of a painted steel sheet that is obtained by painting a galvanized steel sheet, without using chromium. SOLUTION: The provided chromate-free paint composition for inhibiting the red rust of the painted steel sheet of which the base material is a steel sheet plated with a metal containing zinc includes a component which promotes a sacrificial protection of zinc. A component which promotes the sacrificial protection of zinc includes a salt of an electrolyte, a powder of a metal which has a nobler potential than iron, and a zinc powder. In a painted steel sheet having both top coat and undercoat films formed from a chromate-free paint on the surface and the rear surface of the steel sheet plated with the metal containing zinc, the inhibiting method includes forming at least one of the coating films with the paint composition.
