PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an excellent method for producing dihydroxyacetone or glycolic acid by which the dihydroxyacetone or the glycolic acid can be efficiently and selectively obtained by oxidizing glycerol at a low cost without using a metal catalyst. SOLUTION: The method for producing the dihydroxyacetone or the glycolic acid comprises reacting the glycerol with an oxidizing agent free from a heavy metal element in an amount of 1-14 times by mol as much as the glycerol, at 180-370°C temperature in the subcritical water under 1-25 MPa pressure.
