<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a summarization device capable of securing exhaustivity in important parts, and also securing easy reading, and to provide a summarization method. <P>SOLUTION: The summarization device performs processing as follows. Whole sentences similar to the respective sentences in a text to be summarized are extracted, so as to generate association information where the sentences to be summarized are associated with the similar sentences. Similar sentence appearance rates are calculated based on the numbers of the similar texts with the corresponding similar sentences appearing therein, which are calculated by each sentence, concerning the whole sentences in the text to be summarized. Important sentences are extracted from the text to be summarized, based on the similar sentence appearance rates. Connection support rates between the extracted important sentences are calculated. When the connection support rate is determined to be low concerning the adjacent important sentences, the connection support rate is calculated concerning the important sentence where an unimportant sentence is inserted between the important sentences. The connection support rate is compared with a prescribed threshold.
