PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sheet conveying device capable of detecting an accurate position of an end part of a sheet even when partial abnormality occurs on a plurality of reading parts. SOLUTION: Whether a CIS element (picture element) at a position supposed to be used for detection of a sheet end part is abnormal or not is previously detected in detecting the sheet end part by a lateral slippage detection CIS 800. Pre-shifting to move the sheet in the cross direction by a lateral slippage correction roller 902 is carried out before detecting the end part so as to avoid detection at this position in case of abnormality (S10). Thereafter, detection of the sheet end part is carried out by the lateral slippage detection CIS 800 to determine a lateral slippage detection value X3 (S11). Shift quantity is computed from the lateral slippage detection value X3 and a standard position X1 (S12), and lateral shifting is carried out so as to return by the computed shift quantity (S13).
