The method involves determining a drive torque necessary for maintaining an engine idle speed of an internal combustion engine (31) and an electric motor (34) by a regulator (45) i.e. proportional-integral-derivative controller. An angle variation is detected between undergrounds and horizontals by detecting signal of an acceleration sensor (37) to accelerate a vehicle in a longitudinal direction. A variation value of the torque is determined from the angle variation. Another torque is determined based on a sum of the former torque and the value. The vehicle is driven with the latter torque. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a computer program product with instructions for controlling a method of operating a vehicle (2) a controller for a drive motor of a vehicle, including a regulator.
