The mechanism (10a) has a drive unit (20a) driving an eccentric tappet. A leveling unit has a coupling unit for transferring a drive moment from the eccentric tappet to a rotary drivable leveling mass. The coupling unit reverses a direction of rotation. The coupling unit has a gear wheel that is formed as a bevel gear. The leveling unit has a counter wheel that is coaxially arranged at the eccentric tappet on a common eccentric tappet axis, where the counter wheel has a smaller radius than the eccentric tappet. An independent claim is also included for a method for a hammer mechanism.
