The use of low-chloride, low-carbonate silica sand (I) as retention medium for catalysts based on solid acids in solid bed reactors. An independent claim is included for a method for the production of Bisphenol A from phenol and acetone in downward-flow solid bed reactors containing acid ion exchange resins (II) as catalysts, in which (I) is used as retention medium for (II).
