PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording and reproducing device which prevents formation of a loop by regulating the output signals, if there is a possibility of loop formation when making a connection as to return the output signals from the output terminal to the input terminal, and also provide its control method. SOLUTION: In a digital recording and reproducing device 11 which has a function to copy information by itself through connecting its input and output terminals together to input the output information signal, a processing means (35) is provided to switch the signal so that the information signal input into the input (18) may not be output from the output (23) when there is a possibility of loop formation to return the information signal which is input into the input (18) and output from the output (23) back again to the input (18).
