PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic tape recording and reproducing device including a mechanism for protecting a recording and reproducing head including a magnetoresistive effect element from an abnormal protrusion or foreign substance on a magnetic tape. SOLUTION: The magnetic tape recording and reproducing device including recording and reproducing heads 13a, 13b capable of recording and reproducing information on the magnetic tape 1 includes: protrusion detection sensors 21a, 21b arranged on upstream sides of the recording and reproducing heads 13a, 13b in a traveling direction of the magnetic tape 1 and capable of detecting the existence of a protrusion or foreign substance on the magnetic tape 1; and push-out guide parts 14a, 14b arranged near the recording and reproducing heads 13a, 13b and moving the magnetic tape 1 in a direction separated from the recording and reproducing heads 13a, 13b when the protrusion detection sensors 21a, 21b detect a protrusion or foreign substance exceeding a prescribed size.
