PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a constant velocity universal joint equipped with an enhanced rigidity and strength of its retainer and exerting a good operating effectiveness, in particular when the operation is conducted with a high operation angle. SOLUTION: The constant velocity universal joint 1 is equipped as major constituent members, with an outer ring 10, an inner ring 20, balls 30, and the retainer 40. At the inside surface in two places of the retainer 40 at its one end, recesses 44, which allow the insertion of the inner ring 20 in a condition with the axis intersecting perpendicularly with the axis of the retainer 40, are formed with the two places opposed by 180 degrees.
